Scholarship
Scholarship remains an important part of life for all Michigan State University students especially for Greek organizations. Greek life was founded on the principles of academic and social success. The Greek community's goal is to make its members better students and better leaders. National Panhellenic Council (NPC) requires that each woman going through the recruitment process have at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average. Each house has its one scholarship chairperson, who not only enforces individual house standards but also promotes academic success for each member. Last year alone NPC gave out $2.8 million in scholarships.
The Interfraternity Council, the student-led governing body that oversees the men’s fraternities at MSU, has a program entitled “Standards for Chapter Excellence.” This program was created with the simple intent to raise the bar academically for men. The Greek community prides itself on helping one another and holding one another to higher standards.
Gamma Sigma Alpha
Academic Greek Honorary Society
Gamma Sigma Alpha is committed to the leadership, academic achievement and excellence of Greek members everywhere.
Greek members with outstanding academic achievement are eligible to become a member of Gamma Sigma Alpha at Michigan State University. Gamma Sigma Alpha is a National Greek Academic Honor Society. Chapter members of junior or senior status with a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA or a 3.5 semester GPA any semester of their junior or senior year are eligible. Membership into Gamma Sigma Alpha is for a lifetime, and over 5,000 Greek scholars from over 140 campuses are in this prestigious organization.
Gamma Sigma Alpha exists to recognize and advance academic excellence as a core value of fraternities and sororities. We do this through our recognition of Greek communities with grade point averages over the campus average, scholarships for members pursuing graduate work, presenting academic programming at regional conferences and our research initiative.

Mary Beth Knox Scholarship
Mary Beth Knox was a 21 year old student at Michigan State University and had similar characteristics to any college student. She valued school, friendship and family. In the fall of her freshman year at Michigan State University, she and her twin sister Marcy joined Alpha Chi Omega. Her continuous smile, outgoing personality and enjoyment for life impacted many women and made her "our Mary Beth". In March of 2006, Mary Beth was diagnosed with Sarcoma, a cancer of the soft tissue. Even throughout the progression of her disease, her optimism was unparalleled. Her courage inspired each and every one of us. On March 27, 2007, Mary Beth lost her fight with Sarcoma at the age of 22. Although she is no longer with us physically, she is and always will be an Alpha Chi. This scholarship allows her friends, family and sorority to keep her memory alive at Michigan State while assisting a fellow student from the Greek community both financially and through the inspiration of her life.
The Panhellenic Council at Michigan State University wishes to honor the
life of Mary Beth Knox by establishing the Mary Beth Knox Scholarship. The
Mary Beth Knox Scholarship is awarded to one member of a sorority and one
member of a fraternity each spring during Greek Week in memory of Mary
Beth's life.
Award recipients will be selected based on the following criteria:
